I thought I’d do something new, something different for me. Call it a project; I’ll call it a new adventure. I’m looking forward to doing this and the people I will meet.
Throughout my career as a photographer, I meet and have met a lot of people. Some even have become great friends. As I photograph weddings, I meet people catering to brides just like I do (but in their own special way!) I’m here to share those people with you! It may help you discover a new person, business, etc that can help on your day (or for any occasion)…and for me…well; I get to network with others.
Name: Katie Booth
Business: House of Flowers
Location: 518 Main Street, Montague
I met Katie only a couple of times and am so impressed with her lovely spirit. She has such a joyful smile and her store, House of Flowers (fb link), is as bright and cheery as she is. I chose Katie because she does lovely work (you really need to go see for yourself), supports other local businesses, and she is a new business. As a business owner myself, starting out sure has it challenges. I also have a love of flowers and gardening (thanks to my mom and dad) and one of my favourite jobs was working at a flower shop.
While you visit House of Flowers say hi to Rita too! Here is Katie’s story:
1. How did you get started?
I have always dreamed of owning my own business and I have always had a passion for flowers, both garden flowers and cut flowers, so naturally when the opportunity came to open up a flower shop in Montague it was a great fit!
2. What do you find most enjoyable about your job?
Getting to create original designs daily with my co-worker Rita. Rita and I work very well together, we almost feed off of each other in a way and have a great time doing it!
3. How many weddings have you done?
We have been open since January 31st, 2014 so this summer was our first wedding season. We had 11 weddings booked this summer and I anticipate at least to double that amount next summer.
4. What design styles do you like? How do you describe your style?
When it comes to wedding bouquets I enjoy putting together hand-tied bouquets that have some ‘air’ and movement to them. I like using different textures and heights of flowers to add interest. I do like a challenge though so I am up for anything really!
5. Can you work with brides on budgets?
Yep – every bride I meet has a budget and working to find a balance is all part of the fun.
6. Do you use organic/local products?
I do. I have worked with Barb Jewell of Island Meadow Farms quite a few times this summer on different weddings. She has beautiful product that is grown on her farm. The colours and smells are amazing. I think it is important to buy from local growers whenever you can because then the money stays on PEI. Plus, it is a huge bonus for me because I am saving the shipping and freight costs. It’s a win win really.
7. Where does your inspiration come from?
Everywhere and everything! The different seasons, the landscapes, gardens… there is inspiration all around.
8. Do you continue to educate yourself?
I do. I like to keep up to date with all the latest trends out there. I like anticipating what is coming and seeing if I was on cue. I like to research random flower shops around the world and see what they are into. Here at House of Flowers we like to do original designs daily. We don’t look at books unless someone wants something specific. If not we like to play around with our designs. Keep its fun and ever changing.
9. Favourite colour? Favourite flower?
I always have a hard time with the favourite colour question because I love colour! Right now though I find I am really drawn to corals. And same goes for my favourite flower. I love them all so I find it difficult to choose just one or two. With that being said I really love dahlias, zinnias and garden roses.
10. Busiest holiday?
We opened 2 weeks before Valentine’s Day and had an amazing couple of days. I would have to say that we did better than expected so I am hoping to be doubling that business for this coming Valentine’s Day. Mother’s Day would also be one of the busiest holidays for us as well. Everybody has got a mother! Whether she is still with you or has passed on, you can always get her flowers.
11. What products/plants/etc. do you offer?
We have got a great selection of home décor and giftware in the shop. Our candle line, Lucia has become a favourite of mine and many of my customers and they make a great add on to any bouquet. Our card line, Compendium is also a favourite of mine. Each card is beautifully illustrated and has a popular quote. They are simple and to the point and I love them. They are also 100% eco-friendly and 10% of the profits are donated to organizations that work to protect the environment. It is important to me to offer my customers the chance to lessen their carbon footprint. When it comes to home décor the pieces that I sell in the store are a reflection of me and my tastes. We’ve got coasters, lanterns and picture frames just to name a few. We also sell silk arrangements and carry a wide selection of vases and dishes for our customers to choose what they would like their design arranged in.
When it comes to plants I like to have a wide selection in the store. I love house plants and I think that they add a certain ambience to a home. We’ve got the standard peace lily and ivy plants, but we also carry aloe vera, cacti, succulent’s and the very trendy air plants.
12. Advice for future brides?
Check out Pinterest! I tell all my brides to check out Pinterest because you can get some great ideas. I also tell them that if they are not sure of a specific flower that they see to email me a photo and I will tell them. Also, check out what is in season. Flowers always look their best when you are buying them in season. And don’t shy away from the winter months. Summer is so popular for weddings but winter is something different. There are so many options out there you’ve just got to put your thinking cap on. Cedar, spruce, pine, holly, all of these beautiful and beautifully fragrant greens that are available in the winter make a truly lovely bouquet.
